Synopsis: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ann Brashares comes the welcome return of the characters whose friendship became a touchstone for a generation. Now Tibby, Lena, Carmen, and Bridget have grown up, starting their lives on their own. And though the jeans they shared are long gone, the sisterhood is everlasting. Despite having jobs and men that they love, each knows that something is missing: the closeness that once sustained them. Carmen is a successful actress in New York, engaged to be married, but misses her friends. Lena finds solace in her art, teaching in Rhode Island, but still thinks of Kostos and the road she didn’t take. Bridget lives with her longtime boyfriend, Eric, in San Francisco, and though a part of her wants to settle down, a bigger part can’t seem to shed her old restlessness. Read more...
Review: Reading Sisterhood Everlasting was like catching up with my best friends from high school. Seeing how everyone had changed, what they were doing with their lives now, having a few laughs and shedding a few tears. This novel was completely unexpected, and I only realized it existed after it had been published. For this reason I did not have any time to imagine how the novel was going to play out, or where the four girls had taken their lives since the last time we saw them, 10 years ago.
If I had had time to think about this novel, I probably would have been fairly accurate in imagining what the Septembers’ lives were like now. The girls’ lives were very predictable. Although I did not enjoy the predictability of this novel in the beginning Brashares quickly contrasted this with a surprising and unexpected plot twist. After this plot twist, I felt that the novel, and girls, spun out of control, and mirrored how I felt.
Although I liked the novel, there were two things that I had a problems with. Firstly I felt that the novel started to drag on towards the end. Nothing was really happening or progressing at some points and I felt that there were parts that did not add to the story. Secondly, although it was nice to find the girls exactly how I had left them, I felt that no new character development had taken place in the ten years, or during the novel. For example, Lena was still a passive player in her life, while Bee was still running from hers. I really would have liked to see some change in the girls, and not them dealing with their problems in the exact same way they were when they were in high school.
That being said, I did enjoy this novel and felt that it was a nice combination of heart wrenching and heartwarming. This novel was a lovely conclusion for fans who grew up with Bridget, Lena, Tibby and Carmen.
